Learning Has Layers. Most Systems Miss the Top One.

I’ve been around tech+education for the last five years. Not in a neat way. Just by building, talking, watching, and getting things wrong.

Over time, the same questions kept coming back.

Somewhere along the way, a pattern started forming in my head.

This is my attempt to answer one part of that. Not perfectly. Just honestly.

The Standard Model: Useful, But Incomplete

We already have a standard model for learning.

Bloom’s Taxonomy breaks learning into neat stages; remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating.

It’s useful. Especially for schools and exams.

But it describes learning the way institutions want it to work, not the way humans actually experience it.

Learning in humans is messy, fluid, and deeply internal. Bloom’s model misses two critical things: Internalization & Intuition

And those two sit behind almost every great leap in history.

Where the Academic View Breaks

Take a child learning to walk.

The child doesn’t understand balance. Doesn’t analyze motion. Doesn’t evaluate technique.

Yet learning still happens. The body learns first. The explanation comes much later. This alone breaks the neat hierarchy.

There are many cases where learning: skips steps, loops backward, or happens without conscious reasoning. So I started thinking about learning differently not as a ladder of tasks, but as layers of depth.

A More Human Model of Learning

This framework is not just about education. It applies to: building companies, politics, science, art, teaching, trading, leadership

It’s about how deeply something lives inside you. I see learning in three layers:

1. To Know

Simple awareness. This is the entry point. Facts, words, ideas.

Things entering your brain through books, videos, conversations, experience.

This roughly maps to Remember and part of Understand. At this stage: You’ve seen the idea. You can recognize it again. You may even repeat it. But it hasn’t changed how you think.

This is mostly passive. The brain stores information without deeply connecting it to anything else. That’s why it fades fast if it doesn’t move upward.

When I first read Zero to One in 2021, I knew what Peter Thiel was saying. I could summarise it. I could tell someone what he was arguing.

But it felt dry. Disconnected from real life. That’s not failure. I think every learning journey starts here.

2. To Understand

This is where real learning begins. Here, information turns into meaning. You start asking:

How does this work? Why does this matter? What connects to what? You form cause-and-effect links. You can explain ideas clearly. You can apply them, analyze them, and judge them.

This aligns with Apply, Analyze, and Evaluate.

It’s mentally expensive. That’s why many people never move past it.

Without use and repetition, understanding slowly decays and falls back into “knowing.”

Most people hit their ceiling here.

Two years into building, I read Zero to One again. This time it clicked. Why doing something non-obvious matters. I understood why competition is bad. Why startups aim for monopoly. I could discuss it with my team. I could reason through it.

But still, I had to force myself to operate through that lens. It didn’t come naturally yet.

Most teaching happens at this level. Most knowledge workers live here. This level moves the world forward but mostly in small steps. Big jumps need something else.

3. To Feel

This is the highest layer. Very few people reach it in any given field. This is not emotion. This is not passion.

This is when knowledge reshapes how you see reality. You don’t think through the idea. You sense it. You live inside it.

This is: embodied intuition second-nature thinking perceptual transformation

This is where Feynman lived. Physics wasn’t something he studied. It was something he felt.

At this level:

The Zero to One Shift (Feel Level)

Last year, something changed. I didn’t reread Zero to One. But suddenly, I could feel what Thiel meant by being contrarian. By aiming for monopoly. By avoiding competition not as a strategy, but as a mindset.

Those ideas felt alive. When I looked at: my work, my decisions, people around me, companies succeeding or failing,

I could naturally connect events to those ideas. No effort. No forcing.

The lens had become part of me. I could sense when something was crowded. Sense when an idea was weak because too many believed it. Sense when something had the potential to be uniquely valuable.

There’s still a long way to go. Depth has no ceiling. But I was clearly on the path of feeling it; not just knowing or understanding it.

That shift is subtle. But once it happens, you can’t unseen it. This Is Where Great People Operate This is why people like Nikola Tesla or Elon Musk operate differently.

Obsession comes from here. And obsession never comes without deep internal feeling.

Great people don’t think harder. They see differently. What This Explains This “Feel” layer explains mastery across domains:

Physics: seeing fields, not formulas Math: seeing structures, not symbols Chess: seeing positions, not pieces Music: hearing harmony, not notes Martial arts: movement without thought Philosophy: seeing assumptions beneath arguments

At this level, action needs no push. Curiosity becomes intrinsic.

Final Thought

Learning is not complete when you can explain something. Learning is complete when the thing changes how you perceive the world.

I think that’s the layer most systems ignore. And that’s where all the magic lives.
